TFC #21: Snagit - My Irreplaceable Image Tool

Capture and edit images with ease.

There is no other tool that holds a position quite as high as Snagit in my book.

I’ve used Snagit faithfully for the past several years and I can’t imagine being without it.

As a matter of fact, Snagit was the first piece of software I purchased after going on my own back in March. Even before my Office365 email. 😂

In this article, I want to share how I use Snagit and why it is so valuable to me.

Most people struggle to work with images. Things like changing the canvas size, removing a background, adding text, and other tasks can be very difficult without an image editor installed.

I’ve used multiple image editors over the years including Photoshop, GIMP, and Affinity. All of them are super powerful, however, it’s difficult to use them without investing quite a bit of time to use them effectively.

Snagit became an easy-use-image editor that replaced all of these, plus gave me excellent screen-capturing abilities and more.

Disclaimer: I am an affiliate with Snagit. However, I do not push random products just to get a small kickback. I’m an affiliate for two products right now. Snagit and Vortek Spaces. I absolutely love both of these products and I gladly tell people about them, with or without my affiliate link.

Screen Capture

Snagit allows you to capture screenshots, specific regions, or even entire web pages with just a few clicks.

This works similar to the built-in Windows Snipping Tool. However, Snagit makes even the screen capturing part 10x better.

I love how it snaps to regions and different windows instead of manually drawing a box with your mouse. I also love the scrolling capture option for long web pages that don’t fit on your screen.

Image Editor

The screen capture part is great, but where Snagit really stands out is after the image is captured. The Snagit Editor automatically opens after a capture is taken. (You can also use the editor on normal images that were not screenshotted)

  1. Intuitive Interface: The Snagit Editor welcomes you with a clean and user-friendly interface, making it easy to navigate and find the editing tools you need. The well-organized menu and toolbar ensure that every feature is just a click away, streamlining your editing process.

  2. Annotate and Highlight: Snagit Editor provides a wide range of annotation and highlighting tools, allowing you to add text, callouts, arrows, shapes, and more to your captured images. These tools come in handy when you want to emphasize specific details or provide explanations within your visuals.

  3. Blur and Magnify: Protecting sensitive information or focusing on important elements is effortless with the Snagit Editor's blur and magnify features. You can easily blur out private data, such as personal information or sensitive content, while magnifying certain areas to draw attention to details that matter.

  4. Cut Out and Smart Move: The Cut Out feature allows you to remove unwanted sections from your screenshots or videos seamlessly. If you've captured more than you need, or if an element doesn't fit the composition, simply select and delete it. The Smart Move feature intelligently fills in the background, ensuring a clean and professional-looking result.

  5. Stamps and Effects: Add a touch of creativity and personality to your images using Snagit's stamps and effects. The extensive collection of stamps includes arrows, symbols, icons, and more, allowing you to visually enhance your visuals. Additionally, you can apply effects like borders, shadows, and perspective to further customize your images.

  6. Step Tool for Instructional Guides: Creating step-by-step instructional guides becomes a breeze with the Step Tool feature. Automatically number your captured images and arrange them in a logical sequence to guide your audience through a process or tutorial. This feature ensures clarity and comprehension of your visual instructions.

  7. Background Remover: Snagit makes background removal only 1 click away.

  8. Image Size: Crop, change the overall image size, or the background canvas size easily with the Snagit Editor.

  9. Image Library and Organizing: The Snagit Editor provides an image library where you can store and organize your captured images. You can easily browse through your saved captures, search for specific images, and manage your library effectively. This feature helps you stay organized and quickly access the visuals you need.

  10. Customization and Workflow Efficiency: Snagit Editor offers customization options to tailor the editing experience to your preferences. Create custom profiles, presets, and keyboard shortcuts to streamline your workflow and save time. With personalized settings, you can achieve a smooth and efficient editing process, optimizing your productivity.

Example Uses

I use Snagit for a lot of different things. However, here are a few things you might find yourself doing if you had Snagit.

  • Quickly sending the customer a screenshot of a cabinet you designed, with an arrow pointing to a certain part.

  • Sending someone a screenshot of how to do something instead of writing 3 paragraphs of text explaining it.

  • Capturing images of your cabinets in Cabinet Vision/Mozaik and removing the background so you can add them to your printed catalog.

  • Creating images to share on social media.

  • Adding text to a before/after picture.

Conclusion

In conclusion, after years of using various image editors, I can confidently say that Snagit has secured its place as an indispensable tool in my arsenal.

The best part is, it’s only like $60 for a one-time purchase. It’s a no-brainer.
